- It touches many states including Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan and Indiana.
- Because water circulates so slowly in Lake Michigan, it could take up to 99 years to replace water in this lake.
- Lake Michigan is home to the world’s largest freshwater dunes.
- Because Lake Michigan is joined to Lake Huron at the Straits of Mackinac, they are considered one lake hydrologically.
- Small lunar tidal effects have been documented for Lake Michigan.
- Lake Michigan is the 6th largest lake in the world.
- The Petosky Stone is composed of a fossilized coral, and the only place in the world it is found is on Lake Michigan beaches.
